Handing & Care
Carnations
& Minis
- Unpack flowers
as soon as possible.
- Don't allow
unopened cartons to remain in warm areas for extended periods.
- Don't line up
flower heads by inverting stems and bouncing heads on a flat surface.
- Recut stems
cleanly - Don't smash them.
- Carnations previously
treated with silver thiosulfate should not be retreated.
- Transfer carnations
to a preservative solution containing about 2% sugar and germicide.
An alternative solution consists of 3% sucrose and 50 ppm silver nitrate.
- Refrigerate
and hold flowers at 40 degree F. (5 degree centigrade).
Bud Opening
Transfer carnation
buds to a solution containing 7% sucrose and a germicide. Hold in 100
to 150 fc (1 to 2 klux) of light intensity and 50 to 70% relative humidity.
Consumer Care
- Recut stems
and remove foliage below the solution level.
- Place flowers
in clean water containing a floral preservative.
- Avoid temperature
extremes.
Roses
- Immediately
upon receipt unpack roses and remove lower leaves and thorns carefully,
avoiding injury to the bark.
- Recut stems
with sharp knife or shears or in an underwater cutter.
- Place trimmed
roses in warm water, 105 to 110 degree F (40 to 43 degree centigrade),
adjusted to pH 3.0 with citric acid for 30 to 60 minutes or until
crisp.
- Transfer flowers
to a floral preservative and move to a cooler.
Floral Foam
- Make sure roses
are properly hydrated before placing in floral foam.
- Soak foam in
floral preservative instead of plain water.
Delivery
- Roses are best
delivered in a preservative solution, but if they are to be delivered
boxed without water, insert stems in a small block of preservative-saturated
foam or in vials containing preservative solution.
- If roses are
to be delivered dry, make sure they have been properly hydrated and
include a care sheet suggesting roses be placed in deep, warm 105
degree F (40 degree centigrade) water for 30 minutes before arranging
in floral preservative.
Consumer Care
- Remove lower
foliage and thorns, being careful not to damage the stems.
- Recut stem bases
with a sharp knife or pruning shears.
- Place roses
in clean, warm, 105 to 110 degree F (41 to 43 degree centigrade),
water containing a floral preservative.
- Avoid excessive
heat or any other condition such as strong light or rapid air movement,
which cause rapid evaporation of water.
